A transfrontier co-operation project between Aquitain and Euskadi has been set up by the associations I.D. iniciativas Danza (Donostia-San Sebastián) and Atelier (Hendaye), they propose DANTZA HIRIAN, dance festival in urban landscapes.
It has been created in order to promote the cultural development of the Basque Eurocity through dancing and its objectives are:
To take dancing from theatres to our squares, parks, rivers, streets, beaches, schools, museums... To create an alternative to the theatre, offering both the spectator and the creator the possibility to establish other ways of artistic communication in direct contact with the citizens.
To bring contemporary dance closer to the public in general, and to the lay public in particular.
To work in the public space as a support for a form of contemporary expression. The interest of the relationship between arts and the urban and social environment.
To create a festival with its own characteristics, there is no similar cultural activity in the scope it addresses and where it takes place.
To humanise the Eurocity, to give more value to its artistic and architectural heritage, to create a link between architecture and dance. The public learns how to look at a square, a street, a corner, in a different way... and they gradually rediscover the place. In our case, a new metropolitan reality.
To support Basque dancers and choreographers. To strengthen their professional development, offering them a frame for the dissemination of their work.
The Basque Eurocity straddles the French-Spanish border on the Atlantic side of the Pyrenees, extending along the 50 km urban corridor that separates Bayonne and San Sebastián and containing a population of 600,000. It is the natural access route between the Iberian Penninsula and Western and Central Europe.
